Africa London Nagasaki (ALN) scholarship fund offers Master’s
scholarships for Africans to undertake a Master’s degree in a subject
relevant to the control of infectious disease in Africa. The awards will
support a candidate to undertake an MSc at either the Institute of
Tropical Medicine, Nagasaki University, Japan or at the London School of
Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, London, UK. Priority will be given to
candidates at an early stage of their scientific career. An award will
only be made on condition that the candidate meets the criteria set for
entry on the course for which they have applied. The application
deadline is 27th September 2013.

Eligibility: (1) Candidates applying for a Scholarship at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine must:
-be of African nationality and normally be resident in sub-Saharan Africa,
-be
fluent in English. If the applicant’s first language is not English or
if the studies at university have not been conducted wholly in the
medium of English candidates must take and pass one of the approved
internet-based test (IELTS, TOEFL or a Pearson Test of English)
(http://www.lshtm.ac.uk/prospectus/english.html). The standard of
English needed to pass the tests is high and is in line with the level
of English required by the UK Border Authority in order to issue a
student visa.
-have a
first or upper second class BSc degree or equivalent from an established
university in a relevant area of science (a medical degree is not
essential),
-usually have had at least two years’ prior research experience in an area relevant to the study of infectious diseases, and
-have the support of the head of their institution for undertaking their chosen course.
(2) Candidates applying for a Scholarship at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Nagasaki must:
-be of African nationality and normally be resident in sub-Saharan Africa,
-be fluent in English,
-have obtained an MB ChB or equivalent medical qualification from a recognized university,
-have had at least two years of clinical experience following graduation,
Scholarship Open for International Students: The
scientists of Africa (Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso,
Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros,
Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia,
Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia,
Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco,
Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Sao
Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South
Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Western
Sahara, Zambia and Zimbabwe) can apply for these scholarships.
Scholarship Description: The
ALN scholarship fund is a source of support for African scientists
wishing to undertake a Master’s degree related to the control of
infectious diseases in Africa. Candidates should only apply to the
university of their choice when they have been awarded a scholarship.
The criteria on which selections will be based include past academic
experience, evidence of a commitment to research as shown through work
experience and publications, evidence of an aptitude for independent
learning (which is especially important for candidates wishing to take
the distance learning degree), a personal statement of why attending the
chosen course will further their career, and referees’ reports.
Number of award(s): Up to four awards per year will be made, with the awards being distributed between London and Nagasaki.

What does it cover? Successful applicants will receive a maximum of US$50,000 each to cover tuition fees, travel and living expenses.

Notification: Short
listing of candidates will be done electronically, and final selection
of shortlisted candidates will be done through a video link or
teleconference. All applicants will be informed of the outcome of their
application by the end of February 2014.
How to Apply: The
mode of applying is online. Eligible candidates that want to apply must
follow these steps and submit their completed application by the
deadline date:
Step 1 – Register: Enter your details to create an account with ALN. Create your account now.
Step 2 – Activate your account. You will receive a confirmation email.
Click on the link in this email and login to the ALN web site to
activate your account.
Step 3 – Complete the application form. Log
in (if not already done so) and click ‘Start application in the header
to complete your application.
Step 4 – Submit your application. You
may only submit your application form once to ALN. To submit the form,
tick the box ‘Submit to Secretariat’ and click ‘Save’.
Step 5 –
Confirmation: A message will appear confirming that your form has been
submitted successfully. You will also receive an email confirming that
your application has been received by the ALN secretariat.
Step 6 – Wait: You will receive an email from the selection committee about your application by the end of February 2014.
